The Department of Agriculture (DA) announced that the maximum suggested retail price for red onions will rise to P150 per kilo from P120 due to higher supplier costs.
DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. cited increased prices of imported red onions from countries like China, India, and the Netherlands.
The SRP for white onions will remain at P120 per kilo, while new labeling rules for local and imported onions are being developed.
Onion imports are set to be suspended after January to allow the local harvest in February, with around 48,000 metric tons of red onions and 14,223 metric tons of white onions expected before year-end.
The price adjustment aims to stabilize the market and ensure sufficient supply for consumers.
