San Miguel Corporation (SMC) president Ramon Ang has offered to help solve Metro Manila’s flooding issues at no cost to the government, proposing collaboration with the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) for drainage construction and clearing operations.
Ang emphasized that the key to addressing floods is clearing clogged drains and canals, while also addressing the construction of homes and schools along waterways by building replacements elsewhere.
He urged the public and officials to stop blaming SMC, citing instances where the company repaired blocked canals at its own expense.
The Department of Transportation recently criticized SMC for flooding linked to clogged waterways near their projects, but the company denied responsibility, citing proper drainage planning.
Meanwhile, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered a review of government flood control projects amid concerns of corruption and inefficiency despite large expenditures.
