Hundreds of protesters gathered outside the Chinese Consulate in Makati City on October 22 to demand an end to China’s aggression against Filipino fishermen and its incursions in the West Philippine Sea, including Scarborough Shoal.
Groups like Akbayan Party and the Atin Ito Coalition denounced China’s claim of the shoal as a “nature reserve,” calling it a guise for exploitation and a violation of Philippine sovereignty.
Protest leaders accused China of hypocrisy, saying it harms marine resources and harasses Filipino fishermen under the pretense of environmental protection.
They highlighted that China’s actions violate the 2016 Arbitral Award and Philippine law, urging Beijing to stop its unlawful activities in the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone.
The protesters also criticized Filipino politicians who support China’s stance on the issue.
