The Philippine National Police (PNP) expressed understanding of the public’s anger over alleged corruption in flood control projects but stressed the importance of maintaining peace and safety during protests on September 21.
Acting PNP chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez, Jr. said police officers share the frustration as they are also victims and first responders to flooding.
Around 50,000 police personnel were deployed nationwide to secure protests, which coincided with the Martial Law anniversary and called for government accountability.
Nartatez emphasized that the police’s role is to protect protesters’ rights while ensuring order and warned against groups that might disrupt the demonstrations.
He pledged to personally monitor the situation and urged cooperation to keep the protests peaceful and safe.
