Ombudsman Boying Remulla confirmed that former Rep. Elizaldy Co is likely to face criminal charges before the Sandiganbayan over alleged kickbacks in five ghost flood control projects.
Co, who resigned from Congress on September 29, was implicated in irregularities involving a P289.5-million Oriental Mindoro project awarded to Sunwest Inc., a company he co-founded, while serving as House appropriations chair.
Remulla said other House lawmakers are also among the potential respondents, though it is not yet clear if any senators will be charged.
Authorities are prioritizing the enforcement of asset freeze orders, with P5.2 billion already frozen, while additional cases are being reviewed for filing by November.
Suspension orders for DPWH officials are in the works, but lawmakers can only be investigated, not suspended, as the Ombudsman accelerates its anti-corruption efforts.
