Metro Manila sees an average of 3.6 million cars on its roads daily, a more than 10% increase from the 3.2 million recorded two years ago, the MMDA reported.
Along EDSA, car volume has risen to around 434,000 daily, far exceeding the road’s intended capacity of 250,000 vehicles.
MMDA Chairman Romando Artes said the number of vehicles is expected to grow by another 5 to 10% in the lead-up to Christmas due to bonuses and holiday shopping.
Traffic congestion is further worsened by ongoing public transport infrastructure projects and frequent road accidents during rush hours.
Despite the gridlock, Artes noted that the bus carousel system along EDSA provides some relief, though more buses are needed to meet rising commuter demand.
