Bernadeth Pons and Sisi Rondina secured a thrilling 2-1 victory over Indonesia in the opening match of the 33rd Southeast Asian Games beach volleyball tournament.
The win, highlighted by Pons’s final kill, ended a four-year losing streak against the Indonesian team, silver medalists in the previous SEA Games.
Pons and Rondina, who previously helped the Philippines win bronze in 2019 and 2021, expressed pride and relief after achieving the upset with scores of 15-21, 21-16, 18-16.
The duo aimed to redeem themselves after missing the podium in the 2023 SEA Games while playing with different partners.
Their emotional victory set a strong tone for the Philippines’ campaign and showcased the team’s determination to reclaim its standing in regional beach volleyball.
