Several universities, including five Ateneo law schools and the University of Santo Tomas (UST), have urged the Philippine Senate to proceed immediately with the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.
The deans emphasized that public office is a public trust and that the Constitution mandates accountability without delay, calling for a fair, impartial, and speedy trial.
UST also released a statement urging the Senate to “respect the Constitution” and fulfill its duty.
Meanwhile, law professors from the University of the Philippines College of Law expressed concern over proposals to dismiss the impeachment, arguing these are not supported by facts or constitutional interpretation.
De La Salle University likewise called for the trial’s immediate start, stressing that impeachment is a constitutional safeguard to uphold democracy and ensure no one is above the law.
