Tensions erupted in the Senate of the Philippines after members of the minority bloc led by Juan Miguel Zubiri staged a walkout to protest what they described as the “railroading” of a proposed amendment allowing senators to attend sessions remotely for “justifiable reasons.”
Minority senators accused Alan Peter Cayetano and allies of pushing the measure to benefit absent lawmakers, including Ronald dela Rosa, amid heated exchanges involving Rodante Marcoleta, Risa Hontiveros, and Panfilo Lacson over alleged procedural violations.
The session was eventually adjourned by Loren Legarda after debates intensified and accusations of abuse of majority power surfaced on the Senate floor.
Meanwhile, Jude Acidre urged senators to focus on the looming impeachment trial of Sara Duterte instead of internal political conflicts and conspiracy allegations.
The minority bloc later released a joint statement condemning the rushed proceedings, insisting that major changes to Senate rules require full deliberation and transparent public debate.
