MIMAROPA FACES PROSECUTOR SHORTFALL, SAYS DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE

Mimaropa (Region 4B), comprising Occidental and Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan, is experiencing a significant shortage of prosecutors, according to the Department of Justice (DoJ).

The Regional Prosecutor’s Office (RPO) for the area was established in February 2023, but only 61 of the 118 authorized positions have been filled.

Despite this shortfall, the RPO reported a high efficiency with a 99.39% caseload disposition rate, resolving 6,480 of 6,520 complaints on time.

The office has also made strides in case management and decongesting jails through the Compassionate Justice for All (CJA) program, which helped withdraw 30 weak cases and offered reduced bail amounts to 141 indigent accused.

The RPO is expected to be fully operational by October 1, 2024, as it continues to address the region’s legal service needs.
