Three gunmen were killed by police and soldiers after ambushing Shariff Aguak Mayor Akmad Ampatuan Sr. on January 25, wounding two of his bodyguards.
The attackers first fired a B40 anti-tank rocket and rifles at the mayor’s convoy before fleeing in a grey minivan.
Pursuing community watchmen, policemen, and soldiers cornered the assailants in Barangay Meta, Datu Unsay, sparking a brief gunfight that left the three dead.
The wounded bodyguards, Private 1st Class Manuel Arcega Dondiego and Lakman Eso Tips, were treated at the nearby Bangsamoro Regional Hospital.
Officials confirmed that Ampatuan was the target, noting he had survived a similar ambush over a decade ago while traveling the Cotabato-Isulan Highway.
