Several House majority leaders filed a resolution seeking a constitutional convention to lower the minimum age requirements for president and vice president from 40 to 35, and for senators from 35 to 30.
The move aims to boost youth representation and intergenerational leadership, reflecting demographic shifts and the active role of young Filipinos in public service.
The resolution, introduced by the “Young Guns” bloc led by Deputy Speaker Paolo Ortega, also cites alignment with countries like the United States, where presidential candidates can be as young as 35.
While a recent survey highlighted Pasig Mayor Vico Sotto as a potential 2028 presidential contender if the age rule is lowered, Ortega stated that the proposal has been discussed for years and is not tied to any individual.
Ortega emphasized that leadership should be judged by a public servant’s work and legacy, not family name, and noted it is too early to predict election candidates.
