Senate President Pro Tempore Panfilo “Ping” Lacson said the arrest orders for resigned lawmaker Zaldy Co and 17 others show that the Ombudsman’s investigation is serious and not just for show.
The Sandiganbayan issued the orders on Nov. 21 over graft and malversation charges related to a 2020 flood control project in Oriental Mindoro.
With Co currently abroad, the Ombudsman may seek Interpol assistance and request his passport be canceled to prevent him from evading arrest.
Lacson said critics who claimed the government would not pursue accountability must now acknowledge that legal action has begun.
While noting that the judicial process will be lengthy, he emphasized that the issuance of arrest orders demonstrates that “the wheels of justice are already turning.”
