A recent survey conducted by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) revealed that the percentage of Filipino families experiencing hunger at least once in the past three months has decreased to 9.8% in September 2023.
This marks a decline from the 10.4% recorded in June 2023, and it is on par with the data collected in March 2023.The survey, conducted through face-to-face interviews with 1,200 adults across the country, took place from September 28th to October 1st.
According to the SWS, the 0.6-point decrease in overall hunger between June and September 2023 can be attributed to declines in the Visayas and Balance Luzon regions, coupled with an increase in Metro Manila and a consistent score in Mindanao.
When assessed by geographical area, Metro Manila recorded the highest hunger rate at 17.3%, up from 15.7% in the previous quarter. It was followed by Balance Luzon with a rate of 10.3%, down from 11.3%, and the Visayas with a rate of 6.7%, down from 9.3%. Mindanao also saw a slight increase in its hunger rate, from 6.3% to 6.7%.
Among the total percentage of respondents, 8.4% reported experiencing Moderate Hunger, indicating that they had experienced hunger “Only Once” or “A Few Times” in the last three months.
Approximately 1.3% stated that they had experienced Severe Hunger, meaning they had encountered it “Often” or “Always” during the previous three months.
