The Philippine National AIDS Council (PNAC) has expressed concern over thousands of people living with HIV who have discontinued antiretroviral therapy (ART), a treatment essential for controlling the virus and preventing transmission.
PNAC Executive Director Joselito Feliciano said patients stop treatment due to various reasons, including transportation costs, loss of treatment partners, and loss of motivation.
Data from the HIV and AIDS Surveillance of the Philippines shows that 30,666 patients have quit treatment as of March, representing 21 percent of the 146,164 individuals enrolled in ART since 2002.
Health officials emphasized that ART is critical in protecting the immune system and maintaining long-term health outcomes for people living with HIV.
PNAC continues to call for stronger support systems to encourage treatment adherence and reduce dropout rates nationwide.
