Batangas Governor Vilma Santos-Recto led a boodle fight by the shores of Taal Lake to assure the public that fish caught in the area is safe for consumption.
The event, held with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR)-Calabarzon and local fisherfolk, aimed to dispel fears after unverified reports claimed the bodies of missing sabungeros were dumped in the lake.
Santos-Recto emphasized that the lake’s fish are mostly non-carnivorous and cultured, posing no health risks.
BFAR-Calabarzon Director Sammy Malvas said the event was organized to restore consumer confidence and help boost local fish sales.
Mayors of lakeside towns also participated in the symbolic show of support for the fishing community.
