To reinvigorate the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) amid ongoing corruption issues, Secretary Vince Dizon is reviving the cadet engineering program to train and hire young engineers. The initiative, originally launched in 2013, involves a 26-week training course and promotional exams designed to bypass the traditional patronage system. Dizon credited former DPWH chiefs Rogelio Singson and Jose de Jesus for recommending the program’s revival. The effort aims to bring in fresh graduates and new professionals to promote integrity and competence in the department. Among its first batch of graduates is engineer Lara Marisse Esquibil, recently appointed acting undersecretary.
