The Department of Education will provide meals to pregnant students in public schools for the first time this year as part of an expanded feeding program covering 4.6 million learners nationwide.
About 140,000 nutritionally at-risk learners beyond Grade 6, including pregnant students, will receive meals for 180 days under the P25.7-billion program.
DepEd will coordinate with the health, social welfare, and local government departments to provide maternal and child health support alongside the feeding initiative.
The bulk of the program targets younger students, with over 4.4 million children in kindergarten to Grade 6 receiving meals for 200 days, and locally produced food and milk will be prioritized.
Education Secretary Sonny Angara noted that proper nutrition is essential for learning, highlighting the link between food insecurity, stunted growth, and lower educational outcomes.
