Former Senator Leila de Lima and human rights lawyer Chel Diokno are set to join the prosecution panel in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, following the loss of two House prosecutors in the 2025 elections.
Both De Lima and Diokno are the first nominees of party-list groups that secured seats in the recent elections and have expressed strong support for the trial to proceed without delay.
De Lima, who was recently acquitted after spending years in detention on drug trade charges, accepted the invitation from House Speaker Martin Romualdez, emphasizing her commitment to fulfilling her duties with integrity.
Diokno, who has experience as a private prosecutor in the 2000 impeachment trial of former President Joseph Estrada, also expressed his willingness to serve.
Romualdez welcomed their inclusion, citing their legal expertise and their long-standing commitment to upholding the rule of law, enhancing the credibility of the impeachment process.
