The Commission on Elections (Comelec) revealed that six senatorial candidates in the upcoming 2025 midterm elections received campaign donations from contractors, potentially violating the Omnibus Election Code. Comelec Chair George Garcia confirmed that 26 contractors, both at the national and local levels, had made contributions, with six identified as donors to Senate hopefuls. The poll body is coordinating with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to verify if these contractors held government contracts, which would make such donations illegal. Garcia also noted that in the 2022 elections, 55 contractors were found to have donated, including one who admitted to having government projects and gave ₱30 million to Senator Chiz Escudero, who has since denied any wrongdoing. If proven guilty, violators may face imprisonment and perpetual disqualification from public office, though enforcement for sitting officials lies outside Comelec’s jurisdiction.
