ANGARA: LGUS SHOULD KEEP CLASS SUSPENSION AUTHORITY

Education Secretary Sonny Angara asserted that the authority to suspend classes should remain with local government units (LGUs), responding to DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla’s proposal to centralize this power.

Angara emphasized that local officials are better positioned to assess conditions in their areas, especially during weather disturbances.

He cautioned against pressure from parents to cancel classes due to light rain, warning of the long-term impact on students’ learning.

Rizal Governor Rebecca Ynares supported Angara’s stance, saying LGUs should not be blamed for late suspension announcements due to unpredictable weather.

Ynares added that any canceled classes would be replaced with make-up sessions, possibly cutting into weekends or holiday breaks.
