Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri confirmed that a leadership change is planned within the Senate majority bloc, aiming to make Sen. Loren Legarda the first female Senate president in Philippine history.
The plan, initially discussed informally in the Senate lounge, is not a term-sharing deal with Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III, but an agreement among majority members contingent on their continued support.
Legarda was present during the discussions, and Zubiri emphasized that the idea is being taken seriously, with no objections from the senators involved.
The leadership transition could take place after the Senate moves to its new building in Taguig by the end of 2027, and Zubiri said he is willing to step down to allow Sen. JV Ejercito to take his post.
The majority bloc also hopes to strengthen its ranks by bringing in more minority senators to secure broader support for the new leadership.
