The United States has pledged $500 million in military aid to the Philippines to enhance its defense capabilities, alongside progress on a proposed military intelligence-sharing agreement.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin met with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., reaffirming the alliance amidst growing concerns over China’s actions in the South China Sea.
The funds will aid in modernizing the Philippine military and coast guard, while additional support includes $128 million for infrastructure improvements at Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement sites.
The officials also discussed a potential General Security of Military Information Agreement, which could provide the Philippines access to advanced US intelligence and weapons systems.
The visit underscored continued US support regardless of potential political changes in both countries.
