Senator Marco Rubio, US President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for Secretary of State, called on China to stop its destabilizing actions in the Philippines and Taiwan, warning that such behavior is forcing the US to take countermeasures.
During his Senate confirmation hearing, Rubio emphasized that China must avoid rash actions to maintain stable US-China relations, particularly concerning its aggression in the South China Sea.
He also warned of the global consequences if a miscommunication or conflict arose from China’s harassment of the Philippines, a US treaty ally.
Rubio’s remarks highlight the importance of the US-Philippines alliance and the need for China to respect Philippine sovereignty for regional stability.
Additionally, he stressed the strategic importance of the Philippines to the US, both militarily and economically, calling for continued US engagement to ensure a lasting partnership.
