President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced additional cash incentives for Philippine athletes who won medals at the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand, where the country secured 277 medals and placed sixth overall.
The Office of the President will match existing awards under the National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act, which grants P300,000 for gold, P150,000 for silver, and P60,000 for bronze medals, while also giving P10,000 for victories in other competitions.
Marcos lauded all athletes for their efforts, highlighting historic wins such as tennis star Alex Eala’s gold in women’s singles and EJ Obiena’s gold in men’s pole vault.
The Philippine women’s football team also achieved a first-ever gold medal, marking a milestone in the country’s sports history.
The president expressed gratitude for the athletes’ sacrifices and hoped their achievements would inspire more young Filipinos to pursue sports excellence.
