Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla is facing a new arbitrary detention complaint, just days after a similar case tied to former President Rodrigo Duterte’s arrest was dismissed.
Lawyer Ferdinand Topacio filed the case before the Ombudsman, accusing Remulla and NBI Director Jaime Santiago of unlawfully arresting and detaining former Bamban Mayor Alice Guo and Whirlwind Corp. incorporator Cassandra Ong over alleged POGO links.
The complaint claimed the arrests, carried out without a warrant on Aug. 22, 2024, had no legal basis, with Santiago allegedly saying he acted on Remulla’s orders.
Topacio also accused the two of violating the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act, arguing their actions caused undue injury.
Remulla, meanwhile, dismissed the cases as part of an “organized effort” to derail his Ombudsman bid.
