Senator Bong Go has called for improved medical care for mothers and newborns, especially in rural areas, urging the mandatory presence of healthcare professionals such as doctors and midwives.
As chairman of the Senate Committee on Health and Demography, Go highlighted the importance of reducing maternal and neonatal mortality rates, which are pressing public health challenges in the Philippines.
According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, the maternal mortality ratio in 2022 was 189 deaths per 100,000 live births, significantly higher than the United Nations’ target of 70 by 2030.
Neonatal deaths, often caused by preventable factors like infections and premature birth, are exacerbated by the shortage of healthcare providers and facilities, particularly in remote areas.
Go emphasized the need to eliminate geographic and economic barriers to improve access to maternal and neonatal healthcare across the country.
