PROTESTS ERUPT AS TRUMP LINKS TARIFFS TO GREENLAND ACQUISITION

US President Donald Trump threatened to impose tariffs of up to 25 percent on several European countries unless a deal is reached for the “complete and total” purchase of Greenland, escalating tensions with NATO allies.

He said goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland would face a 10-percent tariff starting February 1, rising to 25 percent by June 1, 2026, until an agreement is made.

The announcement sparked protests in Greenland and Denmark, where thousands demonstrated against the plan and defended the island’s right to self-determination.

European leaders rejected the threats, with the EU expressing full solidarity with Denmark and Greenland and calling an emergency meeting of ambassadors in Brussels.

Greenlandic officials welcomed international support, as polls show that 85 percent of Greenlanders oppose joining the United States.
