Former president and Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo joined impeached Vice President Sara Duterte at the Pride Month celebration in San Fernando, Pampanga, showing support for the LGBTQ+ community.
The event, Kasarilayaan, was organized by the Office of the Vice President and attended by advocates and leaders from the LGBTQ+ sector.
During a press conference, Duterte endorsed a bill authored by Sen. Robinhood Padilla that seeks to legalize same-sex civil unions, promising support to help push it through Congress.
Duterte emphasized that the Catholic Church should not oppose the bill, citing Pope Francis’ support for same-sex civil unions.
The 19th Congress had previously failed to pass the proposed Senate Bill 449.
