President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. departed the Philippines on May 25 to attend the 46th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
First Lady Liza Marcos, Trade Secretary Cristina Roque, Presidential Communications Office Secretary Jay Ruiz, and Mindanao Development Authority Secretary Leo Magno accompanied him.
Aside from the ASEAN Summit, Marcos will also participate in the 2nd ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit and the ASEAN-GCC-China Economic Summit from May 26 to 27.
In his departure speech, Marcos said he plans to discuss key regional issues such as the South China Sea dispute and the new U.S. tariff policy, while emphasizing the Philippines’ commitment to ethical and responsible use of artificial intelligence.
During his absence, Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla, and Agrarian Reform Secretary Conrado Estrella III will serve as government caretakers.
