Pope Leo XIV underwent surgery at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital to remove a cancerous tumor from his right lung, with the Vatican reporting that the procedure was successful and had no complications.
The 71-year-old pontiff was diagnosed with pulmonary adenocarcinoma, a type of lung cancer, after medical examinations detected a suspicious growth.
Doctors removed the lower lobe of his right lung during the operation, while further tests were conducted to determine whether the cancer had spread.
The Vatican initially reported that his recovery was progressing normally and that his medical team was monitoring his condition.
The pope’s recovery has drawn prayers and messages of support from Catholics and world leaders, including Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
