The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has warned of possible lahar flows from Mayon Volcano due to heavy rains brought by Typhoon Uwan.
Intense to torrential rainfall over the Bicol Region from Saturday to Sunday could trigger life-threatening lahars by eroding loose material from the volcano’s 2018 and 2023 pyroclastic deposits.
Communities along major channels such as Miisi, Binaan, Mabinit, and Buyuan, as well as areas on the southwestern slopes like Guinobatan, are at risk.
Phivolcs urged increased vigilance and pre-emptive evacuation for residents in high-risk zones.
As of 2 p.m. Saturday, Uwan was 650 kilometers east of Catarman, Northern Samar, moving west-northwest at 30 kph with maximum sustained winds of 150 kph and gusts up to 185 kph.
