The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a visible presence in the West Philippine Sea while ensuring peace in the region, following President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s directive amid China’s assertive actions against Philippine vessels.
PCG spokesperson Rear Admiral Armand Balilo emphasized that despite challenges from the China Coast Guard, personnel remain steadfast in their duty to uphold the government’s mandate.
The National Coast Watch Council has been reorganized into the National Maritime Council to enhance maritime security governance.
Balilo mentioned potential stepped-up operations, particularly in areas beyond Ayungin Shoal, where recent incidents occurred.
On March 23, the AFP reported another dangerous maneuver by the China Coast Guard against a Philippine vessel, resulting in injuries to navy personnel.
China Coast Guard ships also deployed water cannons against a Philippine vessel carrying supplies for troops stationed at the BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungin Shoal.
