PALACE DISMISSES CAYETANO’S SNAP ELECTION CALL AS ‘WISHFUL THINKING’

Malacañang dismissed Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano’s proposal for snap elections as “wishful thinking,” stressing that there is no legal basis for such action under the 1987 Constitution.

Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said President Marcos is focused on public service and disaster response, not politics.

Senate leaders Vicente Sotto III and Panfilo Lacson both rejected Cayetano’s call, warning it could lead to instability and emphasizing that corruption must instead be addressed through the “certainty of punishment.”

Commission on Elections Chair George Garcia affirmed that fixed terms for all elective officials make snap elections impossible without a new law.

Cayetano later clarified that his call was meant to encourage national reflection on corruption and governance rather than demand the resignation of current officials.
