MORE DEEPFAKES FEARED AS ELECTIONS APPROACH, WARNS DICT!

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has issued a warning regarding the proliferation of deepfake content, following the discovery of a video featuring a deepfake audio of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

The altered recording purportedly showed Marcos issuing orders to the military concerning a foreign country.

DICT Secretary Ivan John Uy emphasized the need for public vigilance against deepfakes, citing instances where other world leaders like Putin, Biden, and Trump have also been targeted.

With numerous elections taking place globally this year, there are concerns that bad actors may exploit deepfakes to manipulate public opinion.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) echoed these concerns, emphasizing the importance of protecting individuals from cybercrime, regardless of their prominence in society.

As cybercriminals employ increasingly sophisticated methods, DICT advised the public to scrutinize online content and verify sources.

Additionally, the agency called for budgetary support to enhance its capabilities in combating cyber threats.
