The Philippines’ office in Taiwan has reassured the public that Filipinos on the island remain safe and are used to China’s ongoing military activities in the area.
MECO Chairperson Cheloy Garafil said there is “no cause for alarm” as life in Taiwan continues as normal despite recent Chinese military drills simulating a blockade.
This statement follows Philippine military chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr.’s directive to prepare contingency plans in case of a Taiwan invasion, given the country’s proximity and its potential involvement in a regional conflict.
The Armed Forces clarified that this preparation is not due to an immediate threat but is focused on evacuation planning for the 250,000 Filipinos in Taiwan.
MECO and the Department of Migrant Workers have contingency measures in place and remain in close coordination with Taiwanese authorities.
