MAYNILAD, MANILA WATER CUSTOMERS FACE HIGHER BILLS STARTING JAN. 1

The Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System Regulatory Office (MWSS-RO) has approved new water rate hikes for Maynilad Water Services Inc. and Manila Water Co. Inc., effective Jan. 1 for the first quarter.

Under the adjustment, Maynilad customers consuming up to 10 cubic meters will see their monthly bills rise by ₱5.06, while Manila Water users at the same level will pay ₱29.86 more.

Higher consumption will result in bigger increases, with Maynilad customers facing up to ₱39.04 more at 30 cubic meters and Manila Water users up to ₱135.22.

MWSS-RO chief regulator Patrick Lester Ty said the hikes are justified as the concessionaires were able to deliver the capital expenditures outlined in their plans.

Consumer group ACCOP opposed the increases, warning that higher water rates add to the burden on households already affected by inflation, and urged greater transparency and safeguards.
