A group of Filipino-American leaders has urged President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to allocate part of the recent U.S. humanitarian funds to support around 50,000 Filipino Amerasians, children of American military personnel left behind after U.S. bases closed in 1992.
In an open letter, the Filipino Amerasian Coalition called for education, healthcare, and job programs funded through U.S.-Philippine humanitarian and defense cooperation agreements.
They proposed an executive order to recognize Filipino Amerasians under the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) and requested 10% of the $250-million U.S. aid package for their welfare.
The coalition highlighted that the Philippines was excluded from the 1982 Amerasian Act, which provided benefits to Amerasians in other Asian countries.
They emphasized that addressing this issue would reflect shared humanity and strengthen the U.S.-Philippine alliance.
