MARCOS SET TO SIGN NEW LEGISLATION AGAINST AGRICULTURAL SMUGGLING

Senate President Francis Escudero announced that the proposed Anti-Agricultural Economic Sabotage Act is set to be signed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Friday.

This legislation aims to combat the smuggling, profiteering, and hoarding of agricultural products, ultimately increasing farmers’ incomes and making food more affordable for Filipinos.

The law classifies agricultural smuggling and related offenses as acts of economic sabotage, punishable by life imprisonment and hefty fines.

It also seeks to protect consumers from substandard food and improve revenue collection for public services.

An anti-agricultural economic sabotage council will be established to oversee the law’s implementation, comprising government officials and representatives from various agricultural sectors.
