President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. reiterated the Philippines’ commitment to international law regarding the South China Sea amid ongoing aggressive actions by China.
Speaking at the ASEAN Summit, he emphasized the importance of adhering to the rule of law and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
However, he did not delve into specific incidents. His comments followed reports of Chinese vessels using water cannons against Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) ships delivering supplies to Filipino fishermen at Scarborough Shoal.
The BFAR confirmed that the Chinese Coast Guard attempted to disrupt the mission but ultimately failed.
Despite a 2016 arbitral ruling invalidating China’s claims over the area, China has maintained control over the shoal since 2012.
