MARCOLETA SAYS CHINA IS UNHAPPY BEING CAST AS THE VILLAIN IN WPS DISPUTE

Sen. Rodante Marcoleta said China is unhappy about being portrayed as the “kontrabida” in the West Philippine Sea issue, citing concerns raised by Chinese Ambassador Huang Xilian during their recent meeting.

He urged caution in public statements and questioned the government’s transparency initiative, saying it could worsen tensions and should be handled through diplomatic channels.

Marcoleta also criticized remarks and presentations by Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson Jay Tarriela, arguing that provocative imagery and language should be avoided to prevent misinterpretation.

Sen. Risa Hontiveros strongly rejected his position, saying the real problem lies in China’s actions against the Philippines, including attacks on vessels and restrictions on Filipino fishermen.

She stressed that the dispute is not a “small problem” but one involving national territory and livelihoods, and said China’s conduct justifies strong public criticism.
