The Philippines will observe Earth Hour tonight from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., focusing on raising awareness about protecting water sources.
The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF-Philippines) chose this theme to align with World Water Day, highlighting the importance of both water cleanliness and its sources.
Angela Ibay, WWF-Philippines national director, emphasized that water scarcity is exacerbated by poor watershed management and climate change, despite the country’s abundant water resources.
A 2024 government report revealed that waterborne diseases remain prevalent in impoverished areas due to inadequate access to water and sanitation.
This year, there will be no centralized Earth Hour program, allowing cities to host their events, with activities planned in Makati, Quezon City, and Muntinlupa.
