Pope Francis has designated St. Gregory the Great Parish Church in Majayjay, Laguna, as a minor basilica, the first in the Diocese of San Pablo.
The Vatican granted the title in a decree dated January 25, 2025, following a petition submitted in December 2024.
San Pablo Bishop Marcelino Antonio Maralit Jr. called the recognition a “wonderful blessing” during the Jubilee Year of Hope and emphasized the church’s role in spreading the Good News.
Established in 1576, Majayjay Church is known for its historical significance, having served as a refuge for Franciscan missionaries and military quarters during the Filipino-American War.
The church, recognized as a National Historical Treasure, has undergone multiple reconstructions and remains the largest parish church in Laguna.
