From January to July this year, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) apprehended 9,736 trucks for overloading, with most violations occurring in Metro Manila and Northern Mindanao.
LTO Chief Vigor Mendoza II emphasized the need for more aggressive, surprise inspections on key truck routes, particularly those leading to and from ports.
He pointed out that while many in the trucking industry comply with regulations, a few continue to flout the law, putting road safety at risk.
Overloaded trucks are penalized with a fine equivalent to 25% of the Motor Vehicle Users Charge (MVUC), as they can compromise vehicle safety, leading to fatal accidents.
The LTO is working with local governments and other agencies to bolster enforcement, including setting up weighing bridges on major roads.
