A measure granting free funeral services to poor families has officially lapsed into law as Republic Act 12309, or the “Free Funeral Services Act.”
The law mandates the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) to implement an indigent funeral package covering documentation, embalming, burial, cremation, or inurnment services for families in crisis.
It defines poor households as those below the poverty threshold or unable to meet basic needs such as food, health, and housing.
Beneficiaries must present required documents, including a death certificate and social case study, to avail of the assistance through accredited funeral establishments.
Violators face penalties of up to ₱200,000 and suspension of license for six months.
