Crime watchdog Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC) has raised alarm over the resurgence of kidnap-for-ransom cases, warning it could severely impact investor confidence and the national economy.
VACC president Arsenio Evangelista linked the spike in abductions—many targeting Chinese-Filipinos—to organized syndicates, potentially involving rogue law enforcers and Philippine offshore gaming operators (Pogos).
The recent kidnapping and murder of businessman Anson Tan and his driver have intensified calls for police reform and stronger action, following similar incidents like the abduction of student Andy Wan.
Civic leader Teresita Ang-See has urged President Marcos to overhaul the police force and refocus the PNP Anti-Kidnapping Group, which has been accused of losing its effectiveness.
Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla has formed a task force to address the rising cases, which Evangelista sees as a clear sign of the gravity of the situation.
