Japan is providing the Philippines a 21.6 billion yen (around P8.15 billion) loan for the continued rehabilitation of Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) to address operational interruptions and other issues.
The Phase III loan agreement was signed on Feb. 4 by DFA Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro and Japanese Ambassador Endo Kazuya.
The project aims to improve the safety, comfort, and reliability of MRT-3, encourage higher ridership, and help ease traffic congestion in Metro Manila.
The loan carries an interest rate of 0.8% per year, a 40-year repayment period with a 10-year grace period, and is tied to Japanese financing and expertise.
This follows previous Japan-Philippines loan agreements under Phase II, which focused on maintenance and integration of MRT-3 with the Common Station for seamless transfers to other metro rail lines.
