Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Juan Ponce Enrile criticized former President Rodrigo Duterte for failing to secure the Philippines’ interests in the West Philippine Sea during his administration, despite fostering closer ties with China.
Enrile emphasized that while Duterte maintained peaceful relations with China, he did not take decisive action regarding the contested waters, leading to ongoing issues.
He also acknowledged that international law alone is insufficient to enforce claims, with China’s military advantage allowing it to control the region.
Enrile raised concerns about China’s growing interest in the Philippine Rise, a resource-rich area east of Luzon, stressing the need for security measures.
Additionally, he highlighted the importance of safeguarding the northern portion of Luzon, including the Cagayan Economic Zone Authority, which plays a crucial role in national defense and regional stability.
