CitizenWatch Philippines is urging lawmakers to eliminate lease requirements for broadband connectivity equipment, calling it a major barrier to universal internet access.
Tim Abejo, co-convenor of the group, emphasized that broadband internet should be treated as an essential utility, like electricity and water, given its importance in today’s digital economy.
The group advocates for amending the National Building Code of the Philippines, which has not been updated since 1977 and fails to recognize broadband as a critical utility.
High lease fees imposed by property developers on telecommunications providers are driving up costs for consumers and slowing down the expansion of broadband services, particularly in underserved areas.
CitizenWatch Philippines argues that removing these fees would accelerate network expansion, lower internet costs, and ensure that all Filipinos have access to fast, affordable internet.
