DPWH AND LGUS WORK TO ENSURE SEISMIC SAFETY AMID EARTHQUAKE “BIG ONE” FEARS

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is working closely with local government units (LGUs) to enforce seismic resiliency regulations in preparation for the “Big One” earthquake.

DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan highlighted the department’s responsibility to ensure that public infrastructure, including government buildings, is earthquake-resistant.

LGUs are tasked with ensuring that high-rise buildings in their areas comply with seismic resilience standards.

Bonoan expressed confidence that private buildings in the country are designed to withstand earthquakes up to magnitude 7.8.

The DPWH is also carrying out retrofitting projects on public infrastructure through the World Bank-funded Philippine Seismic Risk Reduction and Resilience Project.
